  • This lacquered betel box (Kun-it) has a beautiful warm colour of bright orange-red (derived from cinnabar) and is decorated with fine geometric patterns (known as the Kunan Kanbyat) in a dark pigment and minute dotting and rings.
  • The box comprises the base, the cover and one internal tray. The interiors of the box, cover and tray are in red-orange lacquer. It was designed to hold leaves for the betel quid as well as receptacles that held the various other ingredients of the betel quid. The box is constructed from thin slithers of woven bamboo that have been lacquered and incised.
  • Cylindrical betel boxes of this colour and pattern have been popular for hundreds of years and takes a lot of time to make.
