Fossil shrimp (Aeger tipularius) from Jurassic Solnhoften limestone, Germany. A superbly-preserved example (note details on the antennae and legs) with aesthetic matrix showing complimentary colours and even some manganese dendrites on the edges.
Solnhofen Fossil Shrimp — Eichstätt, Germany
Fossil shrimps from the famous Solnhofen Lithographic Limestone in Bavaria, Germany, date back about 150 million years (Late Jurassic). These ancient shrimp, often from extinct genera like Aeger or Carpopenaeus, are prized for their exceptional preservation — many show delicate details like antennae, legs, and segmented tails.
Formed in calm, oxygen-poor lagoons, Solnhofen’s fine-grained limestone captured soft-bodied creatures in remarkable detail. This same stone was once used for printing lithographs, adding historical value.
Today, Solnhofen shrimp fossils are highly collectible for their scientific and aesthetic appeal. Ethical quarrying and documentation make authentic specimens wonderful additions to any fossil or natural history collection.
