This serene and powerful sculpture represents a Buddhist monk seated in meditation upon a lotus-shaped base. His arms are extended forward and his hands are joined in the namaskara mudra or añjali, or nop, gesture, with the fingertips raised towards the face and the head gently inclined in a gesture of profound respect and humility.

The sculpture reflects the characteristic qualities of Burmese Buddhist imagery, particularly the restrained elegance and spiritual presence associated with the Ava tradition. The calm facial expression, elongated proportions and meditative posture convey qualities of devotion, discipline and inner contemplation.
