Woolly Mammoth Hair — Yakutia, Siberia
Woolly mammoth hair from the Siberian republic of Yakutia (Sakha Republic) is one of the most fascinating Ice Age relics. These hairs are about 10,000 till 50,000 years old, naturally preserved thanks to Yakutia’s permafrost — permanently frozen ground that can reach depths of hundreds of meters. This frozen layer acts like a natural deep freezer, keeping entire mammoth carcasses remarkably intact for thousands of years.

Local hunters and scientists often discover tufts of hair still attached to frozen skin, along with tusks, bones, and sometimes even muscle tissue. The hairs vary in color — brown, reddish, black, or blonde — and can be surprisingly soft yet coarse. Scientists value mammoth hair for the DNA and chemical clues it holds, revealing what these Ice Age giants ate and how they adapted to frigid climates.

Collectors prize authentic Yakutian mammoth hair for its direct link to Earth’s ancient megafauna.
